( MEP ) Steve Rio on Healing with 5-MeO-DMT, 1/2 Marathon Training and Navigating Shame
How much capacity do we really have?
Episode 77 with Steve Rio: Healing with 5-MeO-DMT, Holding Space and Finding Safety
On episode 77 I speak with Steve Rio about psychedelic medicines and drugs, how his life journey lead him to where he is today and the work he's committed to sharing with the world and how it continues to evolve. I really enjoyed speaking with Steve about how the different parts of his life have come together for him to facilitate life-changing experiences for people using breathwork, ecstatic dance, hot and cold therapy, nature immersion and of course the "God molecule" of DMT. He clarifies for me the differences between the types of DMT and I share a recent experience that was quite challenging in my own integration, and finally we touch on one of the most Universal core wounds, safety ( Listen )
Ironman 70.3 as New Father
Earlier this year I had signed up for the Indian Wells 70.3 race knowing that I would have a newborn baby and it might be ambitious to try and get in the training needed. Eventually I wrote off the race, but since my fueling partner Maurten got me the race slow, they gentled encouraged me to go for it and see what I could do as a new father. Today Jacaranda is almost 3 months old and last week I started to train again. I signed up with Purple Patch to give me the guidance and structure I needed to get the most effective training possible day to day over the next month. I don’t feel like I’ll be at my best but I have been sleeping well, my run feels as strong as it did for Oceanside and the course itself is a little bit more generous with a really flat bike course and a lake swim. Taking the big climbs out of the bike, the current and swells out of the ocean and injecting a more dialed fueling plan with Maurten and training schedule from Purple Patch, I do find myself eyeing that sub-5 hour time. However I really want to focus on the journey, balancing training, health, family and work over this next month to see what’s possible come December 4th. Follow me on Instagram if you’re interested on updates, what kind of workouts I’m doing and how I’m fueling.
On Shame…
My journey inwards has been incredible, extremely challenging, profoundly enlightening and everything in between. And all of this has brought me face to face with Shame. I had a first crack at shame about a year ago and thought I had waded through it enough, but I was wrong and here I am again. This core human feeling is probably the most uncomfortable of all and sits on top of the reality of believing I am not good enough as I am, a very tough truth to accept. However shame isn’t all bad, it’s our relationship with it that gets out of balance due to our culture never talking about it, neglecting it and putting it into the shadows as a society and more intensely as individuals. We have to bring light to the dark disgusting, nausea inducing swamp that is shame. I describe it like that because that is truly how I experience it. My body has adapted this intense physical reaction to it to help protect me from it, however now it does not serve me any more and into I must go. First I read Healing the Shame that Binds You by John Bradshaw which was really helpful, but it was a chapter in Dr. Becky’s Good Inside that really re-opened me to it this time. And finding this episode of Sounds True with Dr. Brett Lyon and Sheila Rubin really has helped me to understand it better and build the courage to go into it. This path isn’t for everyone, but when the time is right and we have the capacity for it, shame is waiting in the darkness for us to explore.
